Presented by Nobu Shimizu, an accomplished geochemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, at the Allègre Symposium (an annual geochemistry conference that in 1997, honored Allègre's 60th birthday), as the keynote address for the conference. Major events relevant to the development of geochemistry are also presented, with special reference to Claude Allègre, former Minister of Science of France, who was instrumental in the development of this field of science.
