B&B Complex Fire, Central Oregon

On August 19, 2003, two fires "sprang up," just two days before President George W. Bush was scheduled to tour the forests around Camp Sherman in central Oregon. Under very dry conditions and heavy undergrowth from years of fire suppression, the Booth and Bear Butte Fires quickly grew and merged, earning a new name: the B&B Complex. Effectiveness of fire crews were limited by the enormity and aggressiveness of the fires, communities were evacuated, local events cancelled, and road closures and smoke affected much of the state.

Several of these photos were published in the Sisters Nugget Newspaper, which also produced up-to-the-minute detailed coverage of the fires on their website.
